Specializing in Palms and Tropical Plants

Chamaedorea Cataractarum
Cat Palm

Cat Palms are native to Southern Mexico and it that might be the reason they do so well in South Florida.  This palm can be grown in USDA Hardiness Zones 10a-11.  Cat Palms like a modest amount of sun. If you will be planting your Cat Palm in a place that gets more than 4 hours of direct sunlight it is very important to ask the grower if they were raised in full sun when they were adolescents.  If you take a Cat Palm that was raised in the shade and then plant to a location that receives full sun the fronds will fade to yellow without additional water and fertilizer.  Ours were not raised in the shade so do not worry.  A mature Cat Palm will reach 6'+.  For this reason they make a great low maintenance hedge for pools, privacy, or just to hide your A/C units.
